Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is the largest provider of free direct legal services in Maryland and the 3rd largest law firm in the state. MLA offers a complete set of services that are competitive with our competitors and tailored to the different needs of our employees. The Consumer Practice Group litigates in state and federal courts to protect our clients` most valuable financial assets, including their homes, cars, savings, income, and utilities. Our work includes defending against mortgage foreclosures and other types of collection cases, fighting consumer fraud, and filing bankruptcies to eliminate debts and protect critical assets. The Public Services Practice Group opposes illegal denials, layoffs, calculations, overpayments, and penalties regarding Department of Human Services benefits, including SNAP, TANF, AABD Cash, and Medicaid. The group also opposes illegal refusals, dismissals and overpayments in relation to Social Security Administration benefits, including SSI and Social Security disability benefits. The group also helps veterans receive benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Client Selection Unit is the one-stop shop for applicants seeking our legal advice. Staff select candidates to determine their suitability, triage legal issues, and determine the appropriate level of service for clients, including referral, advice, or connecting clients with Chicago Legal Aid practice groups for more comprehensive analysis and representation.
Maryland legal aid staff have an important role to play in ensuring a level playing field so that those who need it most have equal access to justice. Pro Bono and Community Partnerships Group manage numerous projects, including four community legal clinics, legal aid offices, adult and youth cases (expungement and seals), and living wills (powers of attorney for health and property) in partnership with the Private Bar Association. Lawyers in our other practice groups also work with volunteer lawyers in individual cases. Legal Services` Health, Housing and Economic Stability group hires a full-time supervising lawyer to work with lawyers and paralegals. The Immigrant and Workers` Rights Practice Group is a multidisciplinary team focused on employment, immigration, migrant workers` rights and human trafficking. The team serves migrant and agricultural workers by dealing with housing, health and safety, immigration and human trafficking applications, wage theft and other illegal acts related to their work. The Trafficking Survivors Assistance Program (TSAP) provides comprehensive services to survivors of trafficking, including immigration, victim representation before law enforcement agencies, and civil litigation for survivors. Our immigration team specializes in representing victims of non-citizenship crimes who apply for special humanitarian visas and a variety of other migration-related applications. The practice group`s employment law team represents individuals in labor disputes, wage theft, claims under the Family Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and advocates discrimination in the workplace in all its forms through administrative and judicial proceedings. The Long-Term Care Practice Group advocates on behalf of residents of long-term care facilities on a variety of issues, including nursing issues, involuntary layoffs, and Medicaid-related issues.
The Children and Families practice group advocates on behalf of students whose right to education is threatened, represents survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in protection orders or family relationships cases against their abusers, and advocates for parents against unwarranted state interference with their parental rights. The Housing Practice Group defends tenants against wrongful evictions, opposes wrongful dismissals from rent assistance, requires landlords to make necessary repairs and fights against unlawful discrimination.
